National Cancer Institute

Our Client's Challenge:

Hager Sharp currently runs the National Cancer Institute's media training program for scientists and staff. Each year, NCI's press office receives thousands of media inquiries, most of which are then directed to scientists who may not have had previous interaction with media.

The Difference:

Hager Sharp designed a regular media training program to include small-group sessions, allowing highly personalized trainings with a former consumer broadcast journalist, complete with peer reviews and take-home tools.

Previously, under the Mass Media Branch contract, Hager Sharp provided the National Cancer Institute with communications counsel and logistical support for the Institute's efforts to educate the public and to promote cancer prevention. Hager Sharp's major assignments included the coordination of event planning and media outreach around the Women's Leadership Summit on Mammography, and ongoing support for NCI's effort to increase patient participation in clinical trials. Hager Sharp gained broadcast coverage in more than 100 television markets across the country, and print coverage on both the AP and UPI national wires and in The Washington Post, USA Today, The Boston Globe, Baltimore Sun and other major newspapers.

Hager Sharp also supported NCI's Office of Cancer Communications with program design and conducted media outreach for the Science Awareness program, and provided the Cancer Information Service with media support for clinical trials, including STAR (Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene), the PLCO Cancer Screening Trial and the BRCA1 screening trial in Greater Washington.
